Kerb-crawling sting near Tooting Common
Monday, 26 October 2009
More than 20 suspected kerb-crawlers were arrested
COPS arrested more than 20 suspected kerb-crawlers in a prostitutes’ hot spot.
A four-night sting saw nearly two dozen men arrested and charged with persistent soliciting with women in the Bedford Hill and Garrards Road areas near Tooting Common.
The operation took place between October 12 and 14 and was carried out by the Met’s vice Unit, St Leonard’s safer neighbourhood team (SNT) and Wandsworth council’s parks police.
The men, who were arrested by plain-clothes, undercover and uniformed police, will appear at South Western Magistrates’ Court next month.
Sgt Eric Ostrowski, of Bedford SNT ,said: “On speaking to local residents, the problem has got a lot better over the years, however kerb-crawling still causes annoyance, nuisance and intimidation to people in the neighbourhood.
“People who use prostitutes will often mistakenly focus their attention on other women passing by.
"The area becomes undesirable, unpleasant and unsafe.”
