Public snaps displayed at Viewfinder

Photographers display their work at the Viewfinder (Hannah Jones)
A GALLERY’S decision to open its walls to the public has created an eclectic exhibition of work by 130 snappers.
Photographs by a range of people, from skilled professionals to children, have been mounted side by side at the Open Salon 2009 exhibition at the Viewfinder Gallery.
The show is the result of a non-selection policy to give everyone an equal chance to have their work displayed.
The gallery put a call out for anyone to submit one image - and it then included every photo received.
Gallery director and curator Louise Forrester, 26, said: “We had a brilliant response.
“We have a fantastic range of work, from gigantic portraits to miniature abstract images.
“We had about 85 prints brought in and around 45 works emailed to us which we have printed up - so around 130 in all.”
She said there was no panel making decisions about what to have in the exhibition, which amazed many of the participants.
She added: “It’s a great opportunity for people to have their work exhibited.
“We had work submitted from professionals to young children.”
The exhibition is also being held to help raise funds for the gallery, which is run as a charity and relies on the support of volunteers.
All participants paid the gallery a handling charge of £10.
A fun photography workshop, with an entry fee of £5, is also to be held at the gallery on Sunday, from 1pm.
Open Salon 2009 is to run until February 1 and admission is free.
The gallery is in Linear House, Peyton Place, off Royal Hill in Greenwich.
It is open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and from noon until 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
