Terry Brown: My chance to realise Football League dream
Thursday, 23 April 2009
TERRY Brown has always dreamed of managing in the Football League - and says he now has the perfect chance to turn that ambition into a reality.
The former Aldershot and Hayes boss has a wealth of experience in the Blue Square Premier, and came agonisingly close to leading the Shots to League Two in 2004, when he saw his part-time side lose 3-0 on penalties to Shrewsbury in the play-off final.
The Hampshire outfit were then beaten by Carlisle a year later, this time in the play-off semi-final, also in a shoot-out, meaning the 56-year-old has never had a shot at the Football League.
“Managing in the league is my ambition,” Brown told the South London Press. “I’ve been in non-league all my life, as a fan, a player and now as a manager.
“The problem is that very few professional clubs delve into non-league when they make appointments. If you’re a non-league manager - apart from a few exceptions - no Football League club is ever going to give you a job.
“Some have done it but it’s very unusual. The appointment of managers at most clubs is based on their track record or whether they have a history with that particular team.
“I’ve got a decent record in non-league but I’m unproven at the next level up. What I do have here, in AFC Wimbledon, is a vehicle to realise my ambitions."
